Murchisonia antiqua was named by Peel (1977). It is not extant. Its type locality is Gray Locality, Sutherland, which is in a Floian carbonate limestone/chert in the Croisaphuill Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Murchisonia (Murchisonia) antiqua by Peel (1977); it was recombined as Hormotoma antiqua by Wagner (2023).
