Corythoecia was named by Foreman (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 525]. Its type is Corythoecia dichoptera. It is the type genus of Corythoecidae.

It was assigned to Corythoecidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
