Taxonomy
Phorus philosophus was named by Whidborne (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chudleigh, North Devon, which is in a Givetian carbonate limestone in the Lummaton Shell Bed Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Philoxene philosophus by Whidborne (1891), Perner (1903), Perner (1907) and Heidelberger (2001); it was recombined as Straparollus philosophus by Blodgett and Johnson (1992); it was recombined as Pseudomphalotrochus philosophus by Wagner (2023).
