Carinaropsis (Phragmostoma) cunulae was named by Hall (1861) [Carinaropsis (Phragmostoma) cunulæ]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Carinaropsis cunulae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Grabau and Shimer (1909), Wahlman (1992), Peel (1993), Wagner (2023).
