Brachytomaria baltica

Pleurotomaria baltica was named by Murchison et al. (1845) [Pleurotomaria baltica de Verneuil in Murchison, de Verneuil & de Keyserling 1845]. Its type specimen is De Verneuil Collection No. 1517, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Brachytomaria.
It was recombined as Brachytomaria baltica by Koken and Perner (1925), Knight (1941), Knight et al. (1960), Peel (1975), Wagner (2023).

Knight 1941 | Turbinate gastropods of moderate size with a notchlike slit which generates a selenizone rather high on the whorl; whorl profile between sutures moderately well arched between the upper suture and the flat selenizone which occupies the crest of a strongly protruding ridge with a sharply concave upper slope, the surface of the selenizone sloping slightly inward above, nearly vertical betwedn the lower concave slope of the ridge and the lower suture, on the final whorl gently arched below the line of suture and tapering gradually to the rather sharply rounded and somewhat restricted, anomphalous base; sutures nearly rectangular but not deep; columellar lip rather long, gently arcuate, somewhat thickened and flattened on the outer surface below; parietal lip with a well-developed inductura; outer lip with a broad, rather shallow sinus culminating on the ridge in a short, notchlike slit which generates the selenizone, the margin of the lip passing from the upper suture to the selenizone at first with a strong backward obliquity then rounding broadly downward with forward concavity to turn sharply backward as the selenizone is approached, below the selenizone passing sharply forward for a very short distance close to that feature and then turning sharply downward nearly vertically across the lower whorl surface taking on a slight forward convexity as the narrow base is approached and crossed; nuclear whorls unknown; ornamentation, other than the selenizone, numerous, fine, elevated, almost foliaceous, transverse lirae, those above the selenizone bifurcating evenly as they pass down over the crest of the arched area above that feature; the selenizone bordered on each side by a sharp revolving lira, the lunulae evenly crescentic, sharply raised, foliaceous, and each lunula sloping distinctly forward. The holotype measures about 25 mm. in height and 17 mm. in width, with a probable pleural angle of about 70 degrees. |
