Archaeoziphius was named by Lambert and Louwye (2006) [The first use of this name is by Misonne (1958), but it is a nomen nudum. He used the combination Archaeoziphius dolloi.]. It was considered monophyletic by Lambert et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Ziphiidae by Lambert and Louwye (2006), Berta (2017); and to Berardiinae by Bianucci et al. (2007), Lambert et al. (2009), Bianucci et al. (2010), Lambert et al. (2013), Ramassamy (2016), Marx et al. (2016), Bianucci et al. (2024).
It was assigned to Ziphiidae by Lambert and Louwye (2006), Berta (2017); and to Berardiinae by Bianucci et al. (2007), Lambert et al. (2009), Bianucci et al. (2010), Lambert et al. (2013), Ramassamy (2016), Marx et al. (2016), Bianucci et al. (2024).
