Scaldicetus bolzanensis was named by Dal Piaz (1916) [no specimen number listed in Dal Piaz 1916: reported to be housed at all'Instituto Geological dell'Universita di Padova no specimen number listed in Dal Piaz 1916: reported to be housed at all'Instituto Geological dell'Universita di Padova]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bolzano, which is in a Burdigalian marine sandstone in Italy.

It was recombined as Idiorophus bolzanensis by Hampe (2006).
