Taxonomy
Aganasteridae was named by Stürtz (1899). It is not extant. Its type is Aganaster.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ophiurinidae by Owen (1965); it was reranked as the subfamily Aganasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966).

It was assigned to Streptophiurae by Schuchert (1915); to Ophiuroidea by Spencer (1925); to Ophiuricae by Lehmann (1957); to Ophiuridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Chilophiurina by Jell (1997).
