Taxonomy
Mizuhoptera sendaicus was named by Hatai et al. (1963). Its type specimen is IGPS 78423, a partial skull (periotic), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sendai, which is in a Pliocene shallow subtidal horizon in the Tatsunokuchi Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Herpetocetus sendaicus by Kimura and Hasegawa (2004), Bouetel (2005), Bouetel and Muizon (2006), Saita et al. (2011); it was considered a nomen dubium by Boessenecker (2011), El Adli et al. (2014).
