Martiniidae was named by Waagen (1883) [Nom. transl. Ivanova (1959, p. 56) from Martiniinae Waagen (1883)]. Its type is Martinia.
It was assigned to Brachiopoda by Smith and Xu (1988); and to Martinioidea by Chen and Shi (1999), Shen et al. (2003), Williams et al. (2006).
