Taxonomy
Gavia howardae was named by Brodkorb (1953). Its type specimen is LACM 2111, a limb element (distal left humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Reynard Way and Curlew Street, which is in a Piacenzian shallow subtidal sandstone in the San Diego Formation of California.
