Taxonomy
Pterotheca was named by Salter (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Atrypa transversa. It is the type genus of Pterothecinae.
It was assigned to Pterothecidae by Fischer (1883); to Carinaropsidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterothecinae by Knight et al. (1960), Wahlman (1992) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
