Phocidaster grandis was named by Spencer (1913). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Geological Survey, 26695. It is the type species of Phocidaster.

Wright 1940 | Bulbous marginal of great height, bilaterally symmetrical, with a profile like that of Pycinaster, ornamented with fine shallow spine-pits between small rugosities. The main articular faces are distinctly concave. The ossicles known were probably single prominent superomarginalia in the centre of each interradial arc. |
