Codinella was named by Kittl (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1120].

It was assigned to Phymatopleuridae by Knight et al. (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stuorellidae by Bandel (2009), Monari and Dellantonio (2024).
