Glyptotomaria was named by Knight (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 115,797]. Its type is Glyptotomaria apiarium.

It was assigned to Pleurotomariacea by Erwin (1989); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Phymatopleuridae by Knight et al. (1960), Kues and Batten (2001), Karapunar and Nützel (2022); and to Gosseletininae by Wagner (2023).
