Spondylus cliffensis was named by Hanna (1927) [TYPE LOCALITY: California; Rose Canyon Shale (Eocene).]. Its type specimen is UCMP 31025 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCR loc. 4922, which is in a Lutetian deep subtidal shelf shale in the Ardath Formation of California.
