Taxonomy

Terrapene ornata was named by Agassiz (1857). It is extant.

It was recombined as Cistudo ornata by Cope (1875).

Synonyms

Terrapene longinsulae was named by Hay (1909). Its type specimen is USNM V 5983, a partial skeleton (nearly complete plastron and carapace with skull), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Terrapene longinsulae type locality, which is in a Miocene/Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.

It was synonymized subjectively with Terrapene ornata by Oelrich (1953), Joyce et al. (2012), Vlachos (2018).
Terrapene whitneyi was named by Hay (1916). Its type specimen is USNM 8617, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is City of Austin, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Texas.

It was synonymized subjectively with Terrapene ornata by Vlachos (2018).
