Taxonomy
Strophodus was named by Agassiz (1838). Its type is Psammodus longidens.

It was synonymized subjectively with Asteracanthus by Woodward (1916); it was synonymized subjectively with Asteraganthus by Jordan and Hanibal (1923).

It was assigned to Cestraciontidae by Chapman and Cudmore (1924); to Heterodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Hybodontidae by Kumar et al. (2021); and to Acrodontidae by Carrillo-Briceño and Cadena (2022).
