Dinocephalosaurus was named by Li (2003). Its type is Dinocephalosaurus orientalis. It was considered monophyletic by Li (2003).
It was assigned to Protorosauria by Li et al. (2004), Rieppel et al. (2010); and to Tanystropheidae by Li (2003), Sennikov (2011).
