Taxonomy
Murex ostrearum was named by Conrad (1846). It is extant. Its type specimen is ANSP 36551, a shell.

It was recombined as Muricidea ostrearum by Dall (1902); it was recombined as Pseudosalpinx ostrearum by Hoerle (1970); it was recombined as Muricopsis ostrearum by Morris (1973); it was recombined as Calotrophon ostrearum by Vokes (1976).
