Ptychomphalus was named by Agassiz (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u J Plie Sepkoski's reference number: 661,1120].

It was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Ptychomphalus) by Licharew (1913).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Licharew (1913); to Ptychomphalides by Knight et al. (1960); to Eotomariidae by Szabo (1980); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychomphalidae by Bandel (2009).
