Taxonomy
Mycterosaurinae was named by Modesto et al. (2001). It is not extant. Its type is Mycterosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Modesto et al. (2001) and Maddin et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Varanopseidae by Modesto et al. (2001); and to Varanopidae by Maddin et al. (2006) and Maho et al. (2019).
