Cardita purpurata was named by Deshayes (1854) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene (Opoitian)-Recent; New Zealand]. It is extant. It is the type species of Purpurocardia.
It was recombined as Venericardia (Venericardia) purpurata by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Purpurocardia purpurata by Maxwell (1969), Beu et al. (1990).
