Hyaemoschus peneckei was named by Hoffmann (1892). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Graz unnumbered, a mandible (Fragment mandible sin. with m1-m3).
It was recombined as Dorcatherium peneckei by Gentry et al. (1999), Vislobokova (2001).
