Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
O. Fejfar and C. A. Repenning 1998The molars are rooted; the occlusal surface is simple "Mimomys-like, relatively narrow. The longitudinal tooth axis tends to be shifted slightly to the labial side (in lower molars) and to the lingual side (in upper molars); this shifting of the longitudinal axis is most clearly visible in the first lower and upper molars. The Mimomys-Kante in particular is a sign of Mimomys ancestry; three basic triangles with primary wings is an indication of Arvicolinae affinity. An important feature is the presence of the cementum in the re-entrants; it is a sign of advancement within the lineage and also characteristic of the later Lemmini. All these feature -particularly, the early Pliocene age of Wölfersheim material- distinguish the new genus Tobienia from other contemporaneous microtine genera.
