Oryctocara geikiei was named by Walcott (1908). Its type specimen is USNM 53426, an exoskeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Spence Gulch, which is in a Delamaran/Topazan marine shale in the Ute Formation of Idaho.
