Bayania was named by Munier-Chalmas (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes T Mi-l-u Sepkoski's reference number: 614,1066]. Its type is Melania lactea.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Pseudomelaniidae by Woodring (1973), Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Harzhauser (2004); and to Thiaridae by Harzhauser (2007).
