Taxonomy
Bernaya was named by Jousseaume (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 121]. Its type is Cypraea media.

It was reranked as Cypraea (Bernayia) by Oppenheim (1906) and Vredenburg (1925); it was reranked as Cypraea (Bernaya) by Islamoglu and Taner (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Cypraeorbis by Darragh (2011).

It was assigned to Cypraeorbini by Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983); to Cypraeidae by Cossmann (1891), Abbass (1967), Groves (1990) and Squires and Demetrion (1992); to Cypraea by Oppenheim (1906), Vredenburg (1925) and Islamoglu and Taner (2002); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Bernayini by Groves (2004) and Groves (2011); and to Bernayinae by Schilder (1927), Perrilliat et al. (2003), Bouchet and Rosenberg (2016) and Groves and Squires (2023).
