Macoma carolinensis was named by Gardner and Aldrich (1919) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Pliocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Macoma (Macoma) carolinensis by Hendy et al. (2008).
