Dimorphodon banthensis

Taxonomy
Ornithocephalus banthensis was named by Theodori (1831) [not the original combination]. Its type specimen is PSP 757, a mandible (single lower jaw), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Banz, which is in a Toarcian marine chalk/marl in the Posidonia Shale Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Ramphorhynchus banthensis by Owen (1859); it was recombined as Dimorphodon banthensis by Owen (1860), Owen (1861); it was recombined as Dorygnathus banthensis by Theodori (1830), Wagner (1861), Zittel (1890), Delsate and Wild (2000), Unwin (2003), Andres et al. (2014).

Synonyms
  • Dorygnathus mistelgauensis was named by Wild (1971). Its type specimen is Private collection of Dr G. Eicken, Bayreuth, a partial skeleton (Radius, ulna, tibia, fibula, partial scapula, humerus, carpus, metacarpus, wing-phalanx, rib, and caudal vertebra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mistelgau station brick pit, which is in a Toarcian marine limestone/shale in the Posidonia Shale Formation of Germany.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Dorygnathus banthensis by Padian (2008).
