Taxonomy
Metopaster trichilae was named by Breton (1992) [Include two subspecies Metopaster trichilae minor and Metopaster trichilae trichilae]. Its type specimen is Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle of Le Havre, MHNH 8415-8425 (Marginal plates) and is not a trace fossil. It was considered paraphyletic by Breton (1992).

G. Breton 1992Enlarged ultimate superomarginal plates large, tall, elongated and relatively narrow, typically in contact with five inferomarginals. Abactinal bulge highly developed. Superomarginals tumid and inferomarginals high. Central area with a well-defined narrow depressed margin. Plates of large size, smoothed or rarely with few granule-pits in abradial side. Enlarged ultimate superomarginal plates of with indentation in abactino-distal position, which can modify outline of the adradial surface of articulation with the neighboring plate.
