Taxonomy
Sauranodontes was named by Lortet (1892). Its type is Sauranodon.

It was corrected as Sauranodontidae by Boulenger (1893), Osborn (1903), Huene (1922) and Kuhn (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Sphenodontidae by Cocude-Michel (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Saphaeosaurinae by Kuhn (1966).

It was assigned to Rhynchocephalia by Boulenger (1893) and Osborn (1903); to Rhynchocephalia by Lortet (1892) and Huene (1922); and to Sphenodontina by Kuhn (1946).
