Metopaster stainforthi was named by Wright and Wright (1940). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Natural History Museum, London, holotype BNHM WW 9328, paratype BNHM WW 3937, BN.
It was recombined as Parametopaster stainforthi by Breton (1992); it was recombined as Recurvaster stainforthi by Schulz and Weitschat (1975), Helm (1997).
