Taxonomy
Megistotherium osteothlastes was named by Savage (1973). Its type specimen is BMNH M26173, a skull, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Gebel Zelten site 6412, which is in a Burdigalian marine horizon in the Maradah Formation of Libya.
It was recombined as Hyainailouros osteothlastes by Morales and Pickford (2017).
