Goniaster mammillata was named by Gabb (1876). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, syntype n°1457.
It was recombined as Pycinaster mammillatus by Spencer (1907); it was recombined as Metopaster mammillatus by Spencer (1913), Umbgrove (1925); it was recombined as Recurvaster mammillata by Rasmussen (1950); it was recombined as Recurvaster mammilatus by Rasmussen (1979); it was recombined as Recurvaster mammillatus by Brünnich-Nielsen (1943), Jagt (2000).
