Lamna (Odontaspis) contortidens was named by Agassiz (1843). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Lamna contortidens by Agassiz (1843), Lawley (1876), Locard (1877) and Ciobanu (1977); it was recombined as Carcharias contortidens by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Odontaspis contortidens by Woodward (1889), Chapman and Pritchard (1904), Chapman (1918), Chapman and Cudmore (1924) and Marsili et al. (2007).
