Skenea was named by Fleming (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066 DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene-Recent.]. It is extant. Its type is Helix serpuloides.

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Fleming (1825); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Skeneadae by Clark (1851), Lozouet (1998), Wienrich (2001), Kiessling (2003); and to Skeneinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
