Exechocirsus was named by Cossmann (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was reranked as Tympanotonos (Exechocirsus) by Kiel and Krüger (2006).

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Tympanotonos by Kiel and Krüger (2006); and to Potamididae by Gründel and Kollmann (2013).
