Ecphora (Ecphora) chesapeakensis was named by Petuch (1992). Its type specimen is UF 23798, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Scientists Cliffs, Zone 14, which is in a Serravallian foreshore claystone in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.
