Paloelodidae was named by Stejneger (1885) [Stejnger (1885) originally spelled the family name (based on the genus Palaelodus) Palaelodontidae. Brodkorb (1961) corrected this to Palaelodidae based on etymology of genus name.].
It was misspelled as Palaelodidae by Howard (1972); it was corrected as Palaelodidae by Wetmore (1960), Brodkorb (1961), Cheneval (1984), Mourer-Chauviré et al. (2004), Sangster (2005), Mayr (2005), Mourer-Chauviré (2008), Worthy et al. (2010) and Worthy and Nguyen (2020).
It was assigned to Phoenicopteri by Wetmore (1956) and Wetmore (1960); to Phoenicopteriformes by Mayr (2005); and to Phoenicopteriformes by Howard (1955), Brodkorb (1961), Howard (1972), Cheneval (1984), Mourer-Chauviré et al. (2004), Sangster (2005), Mourer-Chauviré (2008), Worthy et al. (2010) and Worthy and Nguyen (2020).
