Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. Piveteau 1941It is a small fish, none of our specimens exceeding 10 centimeters in length. Its general appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the tench. A number of differences can be observed between the various specimens. These do not appear to us to have any specific significance. Moreover, the purpose of this work is solely to identify the structural characteristics of the genus. We will therefore classify all these forms within the single species *P. madagascariensis*.
Affinities of the genus Paracentrophorus:
The form we have just studied undoubtedly belongs to the holosteen type of structure. From this perspective, the clearest characteristics are the following:
1. Reduction of the maxilla, which has lost all connection with the preopercle;
2. Narrowness and curvature of the preopercle;
3. Presence of a specialized interopercle.
