Cyathaspis was named by Lankester (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: S u D Gedi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 502]. It is not extant. Its type is Pteraspis banksi. It is the type genus of Cyathaspidae, Cyathaspidei.
It was assigned to Pteraspididae by Woodward (1891); to Pteraspidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963); to Pteraspidomorphes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyathaspidae by Kiaer (1932), van der Laan (2019).
