Romancheinidae was named by Jullien (1888).

It was assigned to Cheilostomatida by Lee et al. (1997); to Ascophorina by Gordon and Taylor (1999); to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006); and to Lepralielloidea by Schmidt (2003), Berning (2006), Guha and Gopikrishna (2007), Gordon (2012), Gordon and Taylor (2015), Di Martino and Taylor (2015), Brezina et al. (2021).

Synonyms

Escharellidae was named by Levinsen (1909).

It was synonymized subjectively with Schizoporellidae by Bassler (1953); it was synonymized subjectively with Romancheinidae by Gordon (2012).

It was assigned to Ascophora by Brown (1952), Brown (1958), Pouyet (2000); and to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006).
Exochellinae was named by Bassler (1935). It is extant. Its type is Exochella.

It was reranked as the family Exochellidae by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956), Brown (1958), Pouyet (2000), Bock (2006); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Romancheinidae by Gordon (2012).

It was assigned to Schizoporellidae by Canu and Bassler (1935); to Ascophora by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956), Brown (1958), Pouyet (2000); and to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006).
Phylactelliporidae was named by Bassler (1953). It is extant. Its type is Phylactellipora.
