Taxonomy
Mesacanthus was named by Traquair (1888). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Mesacanthidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthoessus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Acanthoessidae by Jordan (1963); to Acanthodidae by Denison (1979); to Acanthodiformes by Hanke and Wilson (2004); and to Mesacanthidae by van der Laan (2019).
