Proetus missouriensis was named by Shumard (1855).

It was recombined as Proetus (Pudoproetus) missouriensis by Hessler (1963) and Brezinski (1988); it was recombined as Pudoproetus missouriensis by Lieberman (1994) and Feist and Petersen (1995).
