Taxonomy

Proetus missouriensis was named by Shumard (1855).

It was recombined as Proetus (Pudoproetus) missouriensis by Hessler (1963) and Brezinski (1988); it was recombined as Pudoproetus missouriensis by Lieberman (1994) and Feist and Petersen (1995).

Synonyms

Phillipsia obesa was named by Branson and Andrews (1938).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pudoproetus missouriensis by Lieberman (1994).
Proetus tenuituberculus was named by Williams (1930).

It was synonymized subjectively with Proetus (Pudoproetus) missouriensis by Hessler (1963); it was misspelled as Proetus tenuituberculatus by Lemke (2020).
Proetus auriculatus was named by Hall (1862).

It was recombined as Phillipsia auriculatus by Herrick (1888); it was synonymized subjectively with Proetus missouriensis by Williams (1943).
Phillipsia precursor was named by Herrick (1888). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Granville, which is in an Osagean coastal sandstone in the Logan Formation of Ohio.

It was synonymized subjectively with Proetus (Pudoproetus) missouriensis by Brezinski (1988).
