Prozonarina was named by Schilder (1941). Its type is Cypraea brocchii.

It was reranked as Zonarina (Prozonarina) by Schilder and Schilder (1971); it was corrected as Prozonaria by Harzhauser (2004).

It was assigned to Zonarina by Schilder and Schilder (1971); to Cypraeinae by Dolin and Lozouet (2004); and to Cypraeidae by Schilder (1941), Lozouet et al. (2001) and Harzhauser (2004).

Lozouet 2004Les Prozonarina se caracterisent (Fig. I Oa-lOc) par leur gal be surbaisse, par leur spire legerement saillante au creux d'une depression ombilicale, par leur canal siphonallargement ouvert, situe clans le plan de la sole ventrale et formam un long pontet, emousse mais fortement margine, par leur pli terminal court et declive, rompu par un fort denticule en position transverse, par leur lame interne minuscule, maigre, par leur fossula trigone, reduite, et leur aire columellaire egalement reduite, routes deux non denticulees, par leur angulation abattue, la denticulation de la levre interne se developpant sur la sole ventrale, par leur levre externe calleuse, fortement marginee, et par leur canal exhalant bien delimite, ouvert adapicalement, formam un pontet dejete, fortement margine.
