Trochus cognatus was named by Sowerby (1840) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; Europe, Pakistan.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Trochus (Tectus) cognatus by Vredenburg (1928); it was recombined as Tectus cognatus by Harzhauser (2007) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
