Cerithium submelanoides was named by Michelotti (1861) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene; France, Italy, Oman.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Semivertagus submelanoides by Sacco (1895); it was recombined as Rhinoclavis submelanoides by Harzhauser (2007).
