Metastromatoceras was named by Zhuravleva (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Cayutoceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
