Thylacoceras was named by Teichert and Glenister (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524,1066]. Its type is Thylacoceras kimberleyense. It is the type genus of Endoceratidae.
It was assigned to Endoceratidae by Teichert and Glenister (1952); to Thylacoceratidae by Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
